20190402211705 | Motley | MN | Crow Wing River | 03/29/2019 | 2019 | Break-up | - | - | - | - | Causing Flooding | - | MOTLEY -- When it came, it came fast and it didn’t give Dan and Elizabeth Posner a lot of time to get out of their home on their own. It was an ice jam on the Crow Wing River, causing the river to overflow and surround their home. The water flooded their basement, up to 4 feet and left them stranded. Conservation officers with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources Brainerd West Station used their waterfowl hunting boat and rescued the couple. Tim Collette, one of the conservation officers who assisted in the rescue, said the call came in about 9:50 a.m. Friday, March 29, in Morrison County. Collette said an ice jam caused the water to overflow the river bank, flooding the area where about six houses are located. Collette said some of the homes had people inside, who were fine and didn’t need to be rescued and other homes were seasonal and unoccupied.

20190402211514 | Little Falls | MN | Little Elk River | 03/27/2019 | 2019 | Break-up | - | - | - | - | Not Flooding | - | Morrison County Public Works closed the bridge over the Little Elk River on Grouse Road Wednesday as huge chunks of ice posed a risk to the bridge. While there was not an imminent danger, the ice was hitting the bridge’s beams, Public Works Director Steve Backowski said. With the Mississippi River still frozen, ice was unable to get out of the Little Elk River, he said. When the bridge would be reopened depended on whether conditions improved, Backowski said, though if the weather is as warm as predicted it could be as early as Thursday. Until then, a detour is in place starting at the intersection of Grouse Road and Highway 115, across from Camp Ripley. While this was not the worst ice jam the county has seen, Backowski said it was one of the more severe ones. Individuals who wish to see the jam are asked to not interfere with the county’s work, he said.

Thoughts that since river and flow is so low, that perhaps the channel is restricted downstream of town forcing the flow to back up and raise the ice. There is currently no impacts reported as the ice is still a couple feet below the alley along the river near the dam. With that said, stage can fluctuate rapidly as conditions change.
Jan 11: The flood watch continues for the Minnesota River at Granite Falls affecting Chippewa, Renville, and Yellow Medicine counties. This river forecast is based on an ice jam which has been reported in the Granite Falls area, downstream of the gage. One tainter gate was closed at the dam yesterday which has reduced flows. However, the potential for rising water remains near the walking bridge located upstream from Highway 212 and downstream from the dam. This location is prone to ice jam flooding. At 6:15 pm Sunday the stage was 886.7 feet. Minor flooding is possible. Bank full stage is 890.5 feet. Minor flooding occurs at 888.5 feet. Flood waters begin to encroach the alleyway along the river at the foot bridge. At 889.5 feet flood waters begin to top the controlling bank at Highway 212.
Jan 9: Observer reported ice jam in the area. Should continue to fluctuate around 885.5 for a while.

capturing the breakup lake ice on Mille Lacs Lake, MN being pushed onshore due to strong winds across the lake, resulting in structural damage to homes along the shore. In a 12 May 2013 article by Daniel Arkin, Staff Writer for NBC News, NBC meteorologist Dylan Dreyer reported that, "Amateur video footage captured at the scene shows 2-foot blocks of wind-whipped ice jams stubbornly inching across residential patios at a speed of 2-feet-per-minute." According to a 13 May 2013 article in the Boston Herald, WCCO-TV reported that the ice from Lake Mille Lacs (MILL LAX) reached the doors and windows at the Izatys (eye-ZEHT'-ees) Resort on Saturday morning. National Weather Service Meteorologist Shawn Devinny reported that 30 to 40 mph winds on Saturday 11 May pushed the water into the ice, driving it ashore. The winds eased up on Sunday, giving the shoreline a reprieve. The Department of Natural Resources reported that approximately 10 miles of shoreline are affected, with the ice in some areas reaching up to 30 feet high. |

The Coast Guard cutter Alder cut a path and a break in the weather also helped get the ships moving again later on Saturday. "
The Duluth News Tribune reported at 12:00 am CDT 14 Apr 2013 that the Duluth Harbor had been clear of ice for a couple of weeks, but then, according to Justin Bravatto, U.S. Coast Guard command duty officer for the Sault Ste. Marie sector, which is responsible for icebreaking operations on Lake Superior, the strong northeast winds on 11 and 12 April, gusting in excess of 50 mph, brought the ice back. The Coast Guard cutter Alder, accompanied by a couple of tugs, started making a channel 10 am Saturday 13 Apr 2013, thus enabling the 9 ships anchored in Lake Superior to make their way through the channel. |
